Environmental Services

Environmental Services supports the needs of NTMWD's water, wastewater, and solid waste systems. This team is responsible for environmental monitoring, sample analysis, TPDES permit support, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Environmental Services is composed of Industrial Pretreatment, Environmental Laboratory, Environmental Programs, and Regulatory Compliance. Employees receive regular training to stay current with federal and state regulations. Several individuals have advanced degrees and many are active in professional organizations such as the Water Environment Association of Texas, Texas Water Utilities Association, National Association of Clean Water Agencies, and the NELAC Institute.

Environmental Services

NTMWD’s Environmental Services team performs field investigations and monitoring services from stream to tap and back to stream for many different programs. Environmental Services routinely samples the various creeks, rivers, and lakes in the vast NTMWD watershed in partnership with local river authorities for the Texas Clean Rivers Program

Licensed water operators collect compliance samples for the TCEQ, including the Revised Total Coliform Rule, which ensures safe drinking water throughout the distribution system. Additionally, trained staff collect samples and field measurements for NTMWD TPDES permit renewals. The Environmental Services team also serves on-call to respond to operational emergencies that may impact the environment. Environmental Services coordinates with the Regional Water System, Wastewater Systems and Solid Waste Systems to determine the needs of each system to improve operations, fulfill regulatory requirements and evaluate environmental impacts of activities. The department stays abreast of new technologies, current research and current regulations to determine possible impacts on operations.

Environmental Laboratory

North Texas Municipal Water District's Environmental Laboratory analyzes water and wastewater samples to ensure they meet drinking water regulations and other water quality criteria. The laboratory is NELAP-accredited by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for potable and non-potable parameters and conducts over 135,000 tests per year to ensure compliance and inform treatment decisions.

Our Advanced Analytical Capabilities Include:

  • Bacteriological analysis such as Total Coliform and E. coli
  • Metals such as lead, copper, and mercury
  • Wet chemistry such as nitrate, alkalinity, and hardness

In addition to analyzing samples for compliance with TCEQ regulations and process control, we analyze spill response samples, special studies, and  Texas Clean River Program samples.

The NTMWD Environmental Laboratory accepts samples from NTMWD member cities and customers. Samples must be accompanied by a Chain of Custody Form (PDF). Customers can access their sample data online through our Client Connect program. Contact us for more information.

Regulatory Compliance

The Regulatory Compliance Department serves as an internal consultant to the District on environmental and regulatory issues. Regulatory Compliance partners with stakeholder divisions to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and to foster a culture of environmental stewardship. The Regulatory Compliance Department is committed to continuous improvement, pollution prevention, and environmental compliance.
