NTMWD’s public education team and watershed manager welcomed in Spring by sharing the vital message of water conservation and a healthy watershed to hundreds of community members at The Garden Show 2022 presented by the Collin County Master Gardeners Association.

“Events like this are more than just a place to pick up the right plants for our region,” shared Helen Dulac, NTMWD Water Resources and Public Education Manager. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to talk one-on-one with our community, show them just how important it is to conserve water, and give them the tools – like WaterMyYard.org – to be able to do it.”

With hundreds of attendees to this annual event, Dulac and Bobbi Bryan, Water Resources Assistant, had over 100 new sign-ups for the free WaterMyYard.org tool. The team also played games with kids teaching them about the importance of water conservation and held WaterMyYard prize pack drawings every thirty minutes for those who registered.

Just outside the main entrance was NTMWD’s stream hydrology demonstration trailer where David Cowan, NTMWD Watershed Manager, showed attendees how streams behave under natural
conditions and what happens when those conditions change.

“Teaching people in our community about watersheds is a key component of our mission to protect water quality in North Texas,” Cowan explained. “Having a tool like this allows participants to examine the natural movement of streams and rivers which shows them how everyone’s actions can affect the waterways.”

The stream hydrology trailer is a hands-on educational tool NTMWD acquired through grants awarded from Nonpoint Source Programs at the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
