Preparing Your Garden for Spring Planting (WFAA Channel 8)

Preparing Your Garden for Spring Planting | NTMWD
Many homeowners are already preparing their garden for spring. Make the most of your time outdoors by creating a beautiful landscape that is water-efficient. Start by selecting native and adapted plants that thrive in North Texas and need less maintenance. Test your soil to help you choose the right fertilizers and soil enhancers before planting. Don’t ignore those tags! Be sure to read the planting requirements to make sure your plants will get the right amount of shade and water.

For best results:
  • choose thriving plants
  • do not break up or loosen the root ball
  • dig a hole no deeper and 2-3 times wider than the root ball
Texas Pure Products | Compost | NTMWDDid you know that 50% of water used outdoors is wasted due to over-watering, broken or misdirected sprinkler heads, and inefficient watering practices. Spreading 2-4 inches of mulch in the landscape beds is a great solution to retain moisture and prevent evaporation. As the mulch decomposes, it adds vital nutrients to the soil. Prevent over-watering your lawn by visiting WaterMyYard.org. Sign up to receive a weekly text or email to know when to water and when to wait.

You can buy several varieties of mulch and compost at your local lawn and garden stores. There is also a locally-produced option, Texas Pure Products, available by the bag or by the truckload. Find it at two NTMWD locations in Plano and Melissa, or at select local retail stores.
Denise and Patrick will be back on the air with WFAA Channel 8 for Earth Day on April 22 with more tips and information on rainwater harvesting.
