Businesses, industries, and residents all generate solid waste. The most environmentally sound approach to managing municipal solid waste is to reduce or reuse where possible, recycle or compost, and dispose of waste in landfills only when needed. In fact each year, we divert approximately 50,000 tons of yard waste from the landfill to our composting facility.
NTMWD designs its solid waste system to process and dispose of waste safely and reliably while protecting the environment and water quality. Our solid waste facilities are located, designed, operated, and monitored in full compliance with regulations set forth by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
NTMWD currently provides solid waste disposal services to approximately 980,000 people from five cities (Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Richardson), Collin County, and the surrounding area. Solid waste is picked up from residents and businesses and delivered to our three transfer stations (two in Plano and one in Richardson). There the waste is loaded onto larger NTMWD trucks and transported to the 121 Regional Disposal Facility in Melissa, Texas. This transfer process saves money by ensuring that smaller waste collection vehicles do not have to travel the additional distance to the landfill; it also reduces traffic and vehicle emissions associated with fewer trucks on the road.
